Effective Communication:
A Self-Evaluation Tool

A short learning activity to help faculty staff (instructors/admin) craft clear, role-appropriate written messages (e.g., emails, memos, notes) in confusing or tense situations. Focus is on self-generated writing and self-assessment.

Overview

Learners engage in self-generated writing tasks and assess their own responses using guided reflection prompts. By encouraging self-assessment, this activity supports one of the core principles of adult learning: autonomy. Adults learn best when they can evaluate their own performance, make meaning from experience, and apply that insight to future behavior.

Learning Goal

Built in Articulate Storyline with visual assets created in Canva, the activity uses type-in interactions to simulate real-world writing tasks. Instead of measuring performance with scores, it emphasizes reflection, prompting learners to notice their strengths, reconsider their phrasing, and develop more effective habits over time.

Outcome:
The goal isn't perfection - it’s awareness. By practicing in a safe, judgment-free environment, learners are empowered to experiment, reflect, and grow their professional communication skills.
